After dinner the three men met Jody, Jake, and Dave Wheeler back up in the boardroom.

“Anybody mind if I light a cigar?” Reid asked.

No objections were heard so Reid walked to a side table and opened a humidor. “Anyone want one?”

All the men accepted and turned to look at Jody. “Oh, what the hell, I’ll take one too,” she said.

“All right!” Reid said.

“I’ll probably regret it later,” she said as she picked up a cutter and studied it. “This looks dangerous. Can’t I just bite the end off like they do in the movies?”

Jay laughed.

“What are you laughing at?” she asked.

“You! You’re proficient with just about every weapon made and you’re telling us that a cigar cutter looks dangerous. It just tickled me.”

“Yeah, well, precision weapons are one thing, but that thing looks like a finger guillotine. I like my fingers just as they are.”

Everyone smiled as Jody bit the end off her cigar.

Soon they all had a glowing red ash at the end of their cigar and smoke was quickly filling the room. The smoke eater in the ceiling was once again put to the test.

“All right, folks,” Jay began. “I’d like to keep this meeting short so we can all get to bed. Tomorrow is going to be another long day and I want everyone well rested. Jake, can you give me an update on your interview with Vasquez?”

“First thing I can tell you is the guy is tough to read. He seems fairly smart and kind of smooth. He discussed his fight with Fax-ton. He said Faxton got pissed at him because he was taking too much time on his favorite weight bench.”

“There must be twenty weight benches in every gym on campus,” Reid said. “Why would he fight over one?”

“That’s what Vasquez couldn’t figure out. He said Faxton claimed it was his regular bench, and he was able to lift more weights and do more reps when he used it. Vasquez told him to use another bench or just wait. Then Faxton started cursing him out. Vasquez says he got a little nervous and stood up facing Fax-ton. Faxton shoved him and fists started flying. Vasquez said that the next thing he knew Faxton was swinging a knife. Right after Faxton stabbed Vasquez, Bob ran over with a bar from a weight bench and hit Faxton with it. Bob controlled the situation until security arrived and took both guys to a holding pen in their office. I didn’t know you had holding pens on campus.”

“If you haven’t noticed, most of our clientele here are not exactly Ivy League material,” Buck said. “They come from the streets of some of the toughest neighborhoods in the country. Fights are fairly common around here. We are pretty strict with our ‘no weapons on campus’ policy, but every once in a while something gets in.”

Jake nodded. “Interesting. OK, let me finish about Vasquez. He was boiling over with hatred for Faxton, and he felt Bob had saved his life. He figured that if Bob hadn’t interfered, Faxton probably would have killed him.
